Claude Cowork: Your AI Document Assistant
Assign multi-step research, document, and automation work to Claude. Desktop access is available on paid plans; the web and mobile beta is rolling out by plan.
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is a task mode for paid Claude plans. Cloud sessions are now the default and are still rolling out, while existing desktop deployments may continue to use local execution. Cowork can coordinate parallel workstreams and deliver finished documents, research, and other outputs.
When a task needs a local folder, your browser, or a desktop app, Cowork reaches it through the open Claude Desktop app with the access you approve. Sessions and files are otherwise saved to your Claude account rather than staying only on your computer.
Use it when
You need Claude to inspect several files, create a document, organize a folder, or turn messy inputs into a structured output.
Start safely
Begin with a copied test folder, tell Claude what not to change, and review its plan before approving file edits.
Verify results
Open generated files, inspect moved files, and ask Claude for a change log when a task touches many items.
The Anatomy of an AI Agent
Think, see, act—three capabilities working together to make Cowork your task assistant that plans, executes, and delivers.
Think
Claude plans multi-step tasks, breaks complex work into subtasks when useful, and keeps you informed so you can steer the work before it delivers a result.
See
When computer use is enabled in Claude Desktop, Claude can inspect your screen and work through supported apps and browser pages. This research preview needs active supervision for sensitive tasks.
Act
Cowork runs code in an isolated remote environment. When a task needs local files, your browser, or desktop apps, it connects through the open Claude Desktop app using the access you approve.
