What Is Claude Cowork? A Current Guide to How It Works
Claude Cowork is a task mode for paid Claude plans. You give Claude an outcome rather than asking for a single answer, and it can plan the work, use connected tools, create files, coordinate subtasks, and deliver a finished result.
Anthropic's introduction to assigning multi-step knowledge work to Claude. The product has changed since the video, so use the current availability details below.
The short version
- Cowork is available on paid Claude plans: Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise.
- You can start normal Cowork sessions on the web, desktop, or mobile.
- Tasks run remotely by default in isolated environments on Anthropic's servers.
- Sessions and files are saved to your Claude account.
- Local files, your browser, and desktop apps require Claude Desktop to be open and connected.
- Claude can coordinate parallel workstreams when a task benefits from them.
- Permanent file deletion requires your explicit permission.
This is no longer accurately described as a desktop-only tool or a local virtual machine. The place where a task runs depends on which resources it needs.
How a Cowork task runs
When you start a task, Claude creates a plan, carries out the steps in an isolated remote environment, and reports progress in the session. You can steer it while it works or leave it running and return later.
If the task needs something on your computer, Claude reaches it through the Claude Desktop app:
| Resource | Where the work can run | What must stay available |
|---|---|---|
| Web research, connectors, account files | Remote Cowork session | Internet connection |
| A folder on your computer | Remote session with desktop connection, or a local scheduled task | Claude Desktop and the computer |
| Your browser or a desktop app | Through Claude Desktop | Claude Desktop, the computer, and approved permissions |
A cloud task can continue when your laptop closes, but any local step has to wait until the desktop connection is available again.
What Cowork is good at
Research and synthesis
Cowork can gather information from connected sources and the web, compare evidence, and produce a report, brief, or table. Ask it to show sources and separate confirmed facts from inference.
Document and file work
It can create reports, spreadsheets, presentations, and other artifacts. With approved local folder access, it can also read or change files on your computer.
Repeatable workflows
Skills and plugins can package instructions and connected tools for work you do repeatedly. Scheduled Tasks can run saved prompts on a cadence or on demand.
Work across apps
Computer Use can navigate supported desktop apps when a connector or direct tool is not available. This is a higher-risk research preview for Pro and Max users and needs closer supervision.
Cowork, Chat, and Claude Code
| Claude Chat | Claude Cowork | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Questions, drafting, discussion | Multi-step knowledge work and finished outputs | Software development and terminal workflows |
| Typical interaction | Conversation | Assign a task and steer it | Work inside a codebase |
| Long-running work | Limited | Core use case | Core use case |
| Local computer access | Through supported features | Through Claude Desktop with permission | Through its local or remote development environment |
The products overlap. Choose based on the work and the access it needs, not on an assumption that one is always more capable.
Start your first task
- Open Claude on the web, desktop, or mobile.
- Select Cowork in the message box.
- Choose a low-risk task with a clear output.
- Name the sources Claude may use and the actions it may not take.
- Review the plan and the finished result.
Create a one-page project brief from the files I attach. Include: - Objective - Confirmed decisions - Open questions - Next actions with owners Quote no more than one sentence from any source. Add the source file name beside each important fact. Do not send, publish, delete, or modify the originals. Save the result as a new draft.
Safety and privacy
Cowork can act on files, connected services, browsers, and apps, so a vague request can have real consequences. It can also encounter malicious instructions hidden in content it reads.
- Give the smallest amount of access needed.
- Use copies or backups for important files.
- Keep purchases, publishing, messages, account changes, and deletion supervised.
- Review unexpected requests for permission.
- Do not assume files stay on the computer: remote sessions process data on Anthropic's servers.
- Check your plan, organization policy, retention terms, and model-training settings before using sensitive data.
Claude requires explicit permission before permanent file deletion. That safeguard does not make every edit, move, submission, or app action reversible.
Related current features
- Scheduled Tasks save a prompt and run it remotely or locally on a cadence.
- Dispatch lets Pro and Max users send tasks from the mobile app to an awake computer running Claude Desktop.
- Computer Use lets Claude navigate supported macOS and Windows apps in research preview.
- Plugins and Skills package reusable instructions and connected tools.
Claude Code Channels and managed Code Review are related developer features, not built-in Cowork features.
Frequently asked questions
Is Cowork free?
No. Anthropic currently lists Cowork for paid Claude plans.
Does it work on Windows?
Yes. Cowork can use Claude Desktop on macOS and Windows. Normal remote Cowork sessions are also available on web and mobile. Individual previews may have narrower plan or platform requirements.
Can Cowork access my whole computer?
Not automatically. Local resources require Claude Desktop and approved access. Computer Use can reach more of the visible desktop, so scope the task and supervise sensitive actions.
Do my files stay local?
Do not assume that. Cowork runs remotely by default, and Anthropic says sessions and files are saved to your Claude account. Local resources are reached through the desktop connection and processed as part of the task.
Can I undo a change?
Permanent deletion requires explicit permission, but edits and moves may still be hard to reverse. Keep backups or use a copied test folder.
Will a task continue after I close the laptop?
A remote task can continue if it only needs remote tools and account files. Steps that need a local folder, browser, or desktop app require the computer and Claude Desktop to remain available.
